About Rimutaka Forest Park

Rimutaka Forest Park, located in the Wellington Region of New Zealand's North Island, spans along the western slopes of the Rimutaka Range, characterized by steep hills, native forest cover, and a variety of waterways. Covering approximately 22,000 hectares, the park contains mainly regenerating beech and podocarp forests that provide habitat for native birds such as tui, kererū, and fantails. Historically, the area was used for timber harvesting and as a route through the Rimutaka Hill Road and railway, including the famed Rimutaka Rail Trail. Today, it is managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) and offers a variety of recreational opportunities. Visitors can explore extensive walking and mountain biking trails, including the Remutaka Rail Trail, which follows a historic railway line through tunnels and over bridges, presenting scenic vistas and a glimpse into early 20th-century engineering. Several streams and rivers support freshwater fishing and provide peaceful natural settings. The park is popular for tramping (hiking), bird watching, camping, and mountain biking. Its relative proximity to Wellington makes it an accessible nature getaway for urban residents as well as tourists seeking diverse terrain and cultural history. Facilities range from developed and backcountry campsites to hut accommodations. Its rugged landscape offers challenging terrain for outdoor enthusiasts and quiet spots for wildlife observation. The park’s combination of natural beauty, historical interest, and wide-ranging outdoor activities makes it a favored destination for both day trips and longer stays.
